CHAPTER 22

Peter Ventnor came for her after breakfast, meeting her at the stables as they’d arranged the night before.

Massi felt good.

She’d eaten, had a decent night’s sleep, and a change of clothes.

She wore her cloak, now clean and smelling much less like damp forest and horse, and she pulled it tightly around her. The air was bracing, with a sharp, icy snap to it that hit the back of her throat and hurt her lungs.

It had been cold up in Waldrand, too, but since they’d reached the city the weather had turned, thrusting them into true winter.

“Did anyone ask after Renard?” She glanced at Peter as he led her through narrow streets made gloomy by the shade of the tall buildings around them.

“A few.” He flicked her a look, and she wondered if she was imagining the spark of heat in his gaze.

Probably not.

She seemed to attract a certain type of military man.

There had been a few Jatan senior military officers who’d actually flirted with her while she was in an armed standoff with them not so long ago.

“Will his disappearance cause trouble, down the line?” She didn’t feel guilty about Renard’s death, but she’d like to know if there was a reason to avoid Grimwalt in the future.

Peter shook his head. “The official version we gave is we found Chart and the other two already dead and Renard gone. We looked for him, couldn’t find him, and came home.”

“Edith and the others can be trusted on that?” she asked. It was a good story, but stories could fall apart when there was more than one person telling them.

“I think they can.” Peter steered her through a narrow gate, his hand brushing hers as he walked beside her.

“So, what’s the plan?” She was holding her bow, her quiver of arrows hooked over her shoulder. “You’re sneaking me into the gallery?”

“There’s a secret entrance and a place to watch what’s happening below, unobserved.” He took her through a back alley that smelled of rotting food, and then opened a wooden door that led into a tiny courtyard.

It was dull, a little dingy, and looked disused.

The building it was attached to was the back of the parliament.

Massi recognized it immediately. She’d put up the missive accusing the Speaker of trying to assassinate Ava on its front gates.

The missive was a lie.

The Speaker had not planned to assassinate Ava. He’d planned to kidnap her and force her to use her magic in his service.

But Ava wanted to stay away from any hint of what he’d planned for her. She wanted her secrets to be kept safe.

And the Speaker had harmed Ava. She was no longer the strong, healthy person she had been.

So, even if it wasn’t the whole story, it allowed Kassia to vent its outrage, and the Speaker was hardly going to quibble over the details.

“This is the only way in?” she asked as Peter opened a door set into the stone wall.

He nodded, lifted a finger to his lips, and then motioned her to follow him.
